Individual Counseling Services

Clients who are seeking individual counseling are looking for a one-on-one therapeutic experience where you are the identified client and the treatment plan is tailored to your specific concerns. In individual counseling, you and the therapist will collaborate together to create effective and achievable goals for treatment, and work individually on a weekly basis to meet those goals. Common issues that are best addressed in an individual setting are various forms of anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, difficulty adjusting to life changes, self-harm, grief, identity issues, and anger and stress management.

Family Counseling Services

Family Counseling Services

Families are where we experience our first examples of relationships and how to interact with other people. No matter what your family looks like or how it came to be, they are the people that can impact us the most. Family members can be great sources of joy, comfort, support, humor, acceptance, and love, and alternatively, can cause a lot of hurt, grief, frustration, anxiety, and betrayal. This is why we view family counseling as one of the most beneficial and effective therapy modalities, providing the opportunity to address hurtful assumptions and unmet expectations in the context of the system as a whole, incorporating the perspectives of everyone involved.

Family therapy offers a unique experience where family members can reconnect, build upon family strengths, and increase their support and compassion for one another. Using CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and a family systems approach, we strive to support all members of the family in building communication and conflict resolution skills, establishing appropriate boundaries, developing effective parenting practices, and improving family relationships.

For families with young children, family counseling depends heavily on parent consultation and involvement. Parenting is the toughest, and often most thankless, job in the world. On top of that, we receive contact messages and judgments from all over about what it means to be a “perfect parent”. Just like every child and every family, every parent is different and there are many “right ways” to raise a loving, healthy, well-adjusted child. Although we all strive to be the best parent we can be, there is no way to be completely prepared for the challenges that arise for each child along the way. In family counseling, we discuss the most relevant and effective parenting strategies, and collaborate with parents to explore and implement solutions that will fit their unique child and their parenting style. The overall goal is to make everyday life easier for parents and their children, which paves the way for happier, healthier, family relationships.

Couples Counseling Services

Throughout the lifespan of a relationship, there are many hardships that a couple may encounter that lead to difficulty navigating conflicts, ineffective communication, and unmet expectations. In couples counseling, therapy is structured around the couple as a whole and the primary goal for treatment is to improve interactions, rebuild trust, and increase connection. It is essential to strengthen the bond between the couple and promote compassion and deeper understanding for each others’ perspectives in the relationship. At Hartwell Counseling, we provide the environment and opportunity for couples to reach a higher level of mutual understanding to enhance and revitalize their commitment to one another.

Premarital Counseling Services

Whether you and your partner are weeks away from getting married, or simply exploring the possibility, premarital counseling is an incredible opportunity for all committed couples to learn effective conflict management skills and explore each others’ personal values and expectations about marriage, family roles, finances, in-laws, children, parenting, and so much more. As an added incentive for couples to seek premarital counseling before marriage, the state of Florida has offered a waiver of the 3-day waiting period for marriage licenses, as well as a $25 discount on the price, for couples who have completed the course with an approved provider. At Hartwell Counseling, we are an approved provider and can provide a Certificate of Completion in order for the couple to receive those benefits. Please note that the premarital course must be taken within one year prior to applying for a marriage license.

For more information about rates and length of the course, please see the Rates and Payments page.
